Relay to Relay Radio: Wave 4

In this week's episode, we discuss decisions that maybe should have had more of an impact in Mass Effect 3 and tidbits about the universe that never made it into the final version of the games. With the release of the Resurgence Pack for multiplayer, we obviously had to spend all our credits on acquiring these new characters and playing the crap out of them. We talk about Krogan murder trains and the ridiculous Geth Infiltrator heavy melee. We also touch on the Kinect integration with Mass Effect 3 - we have ideas as to how BioWare can add DLC to encourage players to use the Kinect with their game.

We also take the time to honor some of our loyal listeners with a few shout outs and awkward compliments.

Finally, Galactic Action News 6 is back with exclusive coverage of Captain Cosmic's latest action figure, Grunt of the Tank, Flux's closure and a hanar painter's compassion.

We also share some of our listeners' most creative Mass Effect 3 multiplayer character names! Photos below.

Thank you so much to those of you who rated us on iTunes, and those of you that comment on this blog, and those of you that tweet your questions to us! Keep them coming!

WARNING: We still spoil all the Mass Effect games for you in this episode.

  1. **SPOILER ALERT**

(Is it even worth putting a spoiler alert up?)

I agree with your commentary about the huge buildup of the rachni and the ultimate let down. I specifically remember getting excited about ME3 when, in ME2, you run into that Asari who gives you a message from the rachni queen saying how she will support you in the battle to come. I, too, was expecting a rachni fleet and all sorts of awesome ground battles involving a combined force of EVERYTHING. How cool would it be to see a conduit run with a Geth Armature and Colossus backing you up?

In regards to Major Coats, my theory is that he would've been your point of contact on Earth in ME3 as the leader of the resistance in place of Admiral Anderson IF you chose to keep Anderson on the Council AND the writers kept him there for the whole trilogy as a result. Imagine the incredible twist of Anderson being indoctrinated and working with Cerberus during the coup. BSG levels of sombre indeed, right, Angelo? My guess is that since Keith David is such a big name, he had to be written in to have a major role. Also, going along with the Indoctrination Theory, who would've represented Shepard's nonindoctrinated mind in the final sequence? Love interest perhaps? One of your squadmates in the final run to the conduit?

I'm mixed about the whole concept of the War Assets. When people and artifacts are just shoved into a giant list with a number attached, it really feels demeaning to the relationships formed during the entire trilogy. In ME2, at least they were a little more subtle about things:

    - You get a bonus power and a costume change for characters who are loyal.
    - Ship upgrades, which were a HUGE deal, are listed in a terminal and in your Codex, but affected the entire approach to the Collector Base.

These were solid events that directly affected the amazing end-game sequence in ME2. Reflecting back, I think I enjoyed the ending of ME2 more than ME3 considering the impact of the decisions you make just in the final 2 hours of the game. I replayed that a BUNCH of times.

The numbers felt a little arbitrary, too. How can a Geth Prime platoon have around the same War Asset number as an Alliance Flotilla? One has an advantage over the other and vice versa given different contexts. Instead of organizing by race, maybe the War Readiness should've just been split up by Sword, Hammer and Shield, and the differing "readiness" levels affected the cutscenes at certain junctures in the end-game sequence (like in ME2).

Lastly, didn't it seem like thresher maws were everywhere in ME1? Since they reproduce via spores, and there are krogan everywhere now, I'd expect thresher maws to pop up on Earth and Palaven at least. :)

I haven't been able to listen to this until now, but her are my thoughts

Mako memory: I don't remember the planet, but it has to do with climbing, lots of climbing. And I did the peacock tactic A LOT

Nice Skin?! Really? Thanks I guess XD. I'm also @SynbiosTael on twitter :D

I agree with Nate on Stasis > Singularity. And this is why: Stasis works with everything that is not armored, even if it has shields / barrier and singularity works only in non-shielded enemies.

The Geth Infiltrator is SO good, but I suck at melee, so I'm using him as a fast sniper with the N7 Valiant.

Oh, the Rachni. I feel the same way. In Mass Effect 1 I didn't doubt to save her, but that's just because she reminded me SO mucho about the Formic Queens in Ender's Game, but yeah, I hoped they would have a bigger part in the war.

That comic is AWESOME. There is also a video, I don't know if you have seen it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tJ1LYi_tUM

And last, about how did they get from A to B (ending wise) I've read this and, if it's true, it kinda makes sense.

Thanks for the shout out! :D

  4. You know, I really was disappointed with how little some of your decisions mattered. I had lovely fantasies about how the Rachni queen would help ("Admiral! Reaper forces are too heavy, we have to pull back! Wait a minute, getting readings from the relay, another fleet is inbound! They're... attacking the Reapers! Who are these guys?!) so that was pretty disappointing. The Collector Base result was, basically, pathetic. When I played my character that kept the collector base, I thought I'd have to fight that stupid human reaper thing again but, no, not even that. Bioware probably should've identified a few key choices that would have major ramifications in ME3... http://lazytechguys.zippykidcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/MassEffect3-2012-03-15-18-56-56-57.jpg

The numbers game got kinda annoying as well. Personally, I know it's all to give you a sense of building for a major battle, but I really can't see how you might not have enough! Admittedly, I played enough multiplayer to have essentially 100% the entire time so maybe it did matter.

As for the ending, I'll admit that I did the green ending and liked it. Until I found out about the other endings. I thought that the relays were destroyed only with the green ending (it being the ending with the most beneficial long term consequences) so I felt it was appropriate. However, having seen each ending on youtube, it just seems shoddy. In my opinion, best way to fix the ending would be to either remove the mass relay destruction or limit it to only one choice (preferably green). With the relays destroyed, none of the far reaching decisions you made matter since EVERYONE'S SO GODDAMN FAR AWAY! Keep the relays, keep the decisions. My humble opinion.

Lookin' forward to the next episode!
