Relay to Relay Radio: Wave 8

In this week's episode, we touch briefly on the Rebellion Pack, discuss bizarre Mass Effect fan creations from deviantArt and share our favorite Mass Effect musical themes.

We were also fortunate to have the last Prothean, Javik, return and join us for another reading and Q&A session!

We take a slight detour from the universe of Mass Effect and talk Diablo 3 as well as our individual gaming origins.

Thank you to all the listeners who tweet at us, email us, leave us comments and rate us on iTunes! We love all of you and apologize for the recent delay in responding to messages.

  1. Relay2Relay is back, that means I'm back too!

Steph: why Human Sentinel and not Asari Adept?

Vorcha: Bloodlust. Yeah, the regeneration is pretty insane. And they are hilarious! "Big Monster!!" When they see a brute and things like that :D

Mass Effect 3 OST for me as well, because I'm not really into electronic music... and my fav track is Leaving Earth because... well, Clint Mansell.

I really like to play goddess as a Geth Infiltrator, because you can see everything in hunter mode.

About pizza delivery... do you know you go faster if you walk backwards? :D
You also can't use biotic charge.

On Geth: Geth Primes now drop their turrets behind you, so you get killed a lot by geth turrets now

I too hate water levels. Since Sonic 1 and this music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Yw5jkAHgME (for the record I wrote this before hearing you talk about Sonic XD)

Oh Megaman, I loved that series :D

What about ThunderForce IV without codes? That game was HARD.

My oldest console was the original Game Boy. I was 12 at that time. And I played a lot with the Master System II on some friend's house. And then Genesis, Super Nintendo, Saturn, Dreamcast, Game Cube, Wii (for Super Smash Bros Brawl) and Xbox 360. All bought with my own money because my parents didn't want to buy me any videogame consoles.

I had the same this conversation with a friend. We were talking about how I'm behind on tv shows because I play ME3 a lot, and then she told me I'm already 32 years old and shouldn't I start to prioritize stuff other than videogames? And I was like "yeah, that's what I'm doing :D". Some people don't see the games we play today, there is no way a kid would (or should) play them.

Aladdin on Genesis > Aladdin on Super NES

My parents have never played videogames. Ever.

I played a LOT of PC games too. If we are talking about game changing games I need to mention Command & Conquer. I loved that game sooo much.

    1. Synbios! Thanks for the lovely comment and sorry it took us forever to respond T_T Conventions and cosplay!

I can't speak for Steph but my reasoning would be that Humans have higher health than Asari.

Thanks for the tip on walking backwards!!! Nate and I raged whenever we got that damn mission.

      I've never played ThunderForce IV!

My oldest console was the SNES but it broke after a few hours because it was a hand-me down... My favorite console after that was the N64 but I had to go to my friend's house to play it everyday hahhhahaah.

Videogames are awesome, they make you smarter and you meet cool people who share your love for them. I see absolutely nothing wrong w/ that.

  2. I've found Asari Adept or Vanguard with the stasis bubble to be pretty awesome for pizza missions - just grab the goodies and stasis anyone in your way as you head back to the LZ. It quickly neutralizes the bad guys (and is loads easier than killing them) and your escorts can detonate or shoot them in your wake.

I think poor Javik may need counseling. Or at least a vacation.

    1. Hi Marconius,

That's a great tip. We're definitely going to have to try that!!!!

Javik needs more storytime I think.

  4. Hey guys, love love love the podcast! A few things for you:

Any thoughts on omni-tools? I know they're kind of a cop out narratively since they basically do EVERYTHING, but at the same time I think they're pretty awesome. I admittedly sometimes imagine what it would be like to have one when walking down the street, incinerating and cryo-blasting the hell out of random stuff. The inclusion of things like the omni-blade and tech armor makes it one of my favorite fictional weapons of all time. What do you guys think?

Also, have you guys seen the Mass Effect fanart of one Makani? She does great work. Nate, I know you expressed concern about choosing the "Control" ending and what that'll mean once the extended ending dlc comes out, but check out what Makani does with that ending and the possibilities of what happens after the control ending. I thought it was pretty freaking awesome (and hilarious).

    2. Hey Rob!

We heard from Steph that you saw her at SDCC!!! I was there too! But only on Saturday for 2 hours. This omni-tool question is a great thing to consider and we'll definitely put it into our next podcast :)

I haven't heard of Makani before but wow! Now bookmarked.

Thank you so much for listening and thanks for the comment, we really do love reading everything you guys have to say :)

  6. Enjoyed the podcast as usual, can;t wait to hear your guys take on the EC. Only thing I have to say is in reference to the music. I agree that overall 3 has the best soundtrack, however, my favorite song, by far is Vigil's theme. It goes so well with the emotional moments in 3, as well as carrying all the memories from 1. It evokes emotion in me like no other song but "an end once and for all." I have so many memories, through the trilogy with that song, I can't choose any other song as my favorite.

  7. Most Misunderstood character? Conrad Verner. Sounds weird, I know, but when I did my first play through, I totally told him to buzz off. My Shepard had a heavy military background and didn’t have time for fans so I didn’t see the point. Little did I know that he was actually designed as comedic relief and appeared in every game afterward! Disappointed I missed that.

Glad you remembered my female turian question! The reason I asked is ‘cause it seems like they’re not really segregated in turian society. I don’t remember reading anything about them operating in separate spheres or whatever. Hell, Garrus even mentions a turian soldier on his last ship (reach and flexibility). At this point, I wonder how many of the turians you interact with are actually female. Oh and there was totally a female krogan in ME2, she’s up in the room with the shaman and pseudo-hits on Grunt.

Hehe, you know what I’ve noticed? For all your Ashley-bashing, you appear to have an “Ashley” in your little group. Hint: I’m thinking of the person who, when discussing the volus, said that “they breathe methane and that’s gross!” and, when the vorcha came up, described them as “so gross and they don’t wear pants”. I’d also like to point out that, while I’m not really into human/batarian make out parties, it’s really not that much of a stretch from turian/human romances. Playing a little devil’s advocate here!

Alright, I already did my poorly worded music rant last time so I’ll keep this brief. Favorite soundtrack of the 3 is ME3 by a longshot and “End Once and For All” is my favorite from that. However, I would like to mention the “Normandy Reborn” track from ME2. This track is the strongest in that series because it so clearly belongs to that particular moment. In ME1, the Normandy never felt like my ship. Its introduction was downplayed and I felt like I was just borrowing it from Anderson. However, when the SR2 is revealed in ME2, it’s shiny, it’s dramatic, and it’s most definitely MINE! The score for that scene compliments it perfectly!

Multiplayer: Haven’t done Jade much but wasn’t impressed. I feel Goddess is oddly decentralized and cover can be awkward but, by god, look out the windows and such. It’s gorgeous! You know, listening to your current character lineups and complaints, I think there’s an easy solution. The new mission is fine (albeit challenging) and the team size seems fine to me. I think Team Banana Punch just needs more beef. All your guys are basically squishy. I’m not suggesting using Soldiers on gold, oh god no, but maybe incorporate a krogan here and there or upgrade some tech armor. Hell, the krogan battlemaster with fully upgraded barrier has effectively three times the health of a normal player. Also, hate to say it, but give the batarians a whirl. I started using the batarian sentinel and he’s actually fantastic! Good combination of biotic, tech, and beef! Still, I use my Asari Justicar at every opportunity. Reave effectively makes here a tough character and the bubble is helpful for keeping folk alive. Just consider it!

…’course, it could be that I’m just spoiled ‘cause I somehow scored a level three Wraith. There’s no reason to use another shotgun.

I don’t have Diablo III and have no intension of getting it. Glad to hear you guys are having fun though!

To answer Nathan’s general question, only my dad played video games and only for a brief period. He played Mariocart and Rally Sport Challenge for the 64 (he likes racing) but he either gets too impatient or too motion sick for anything else. Lol, my parents quickly figured out that I liked video games so the 64 was the last console I got from them. I had to save up for my xbox, 360, and ps2 way afterward. Also, Angelo, I never played XWING but I did play TIE Fighter and XWINGvsTIE and XWING Alliance. Freaking amazing! Taught me how to type!

Now I need to somehow occupy myself at work while the Ending DLC waits for me at home. Would love to hear what you guys thought about it BUT NOT YET!

    Cheers,
    Keil Hal

    1. Keilhal! We love your comments. Steph cracked up when she read the bit about ... our "Ashley" person hahaha!!

I just found Conrad Verner to be really annoying :(

In regards to the battle strategies, I LOVE using my Krogan but I personally either use Engineer or Infiltrator because I like to be quick, do my job and get out of there. The Krogans are just a bit slow for me even though their attack output is high and defense is high. I usually pick speed over damage! I believe only 2 of us have Batarians (me and Angelo), and I spec'd my Batarian Soldier to be a close range assassin haha. Ballistic blades and shotguns (my favorite is the Geth Plasma Shotgun) for me~ I find that his defense is pretty high as well.

Our next podcast will be up on Monday!! Thanks again for listening :)
